Steven Barnsley and Derek Bate formed their practice in 1989. It was the first step in the jointly held ambition to provide a high quality fast response service for commercial, industrial and residential property clients.

Steven Barnsley began his career with the Gordon Hinton practice in 1979 and over the following ten years worked at Bernard Thorpe and Grimley J. R. Eve qualifying in 1986 as a Chartered Building Surveyor and gaining a wide experience in all aspects of the commercial and industrial property business.

Derek Bate trained at the D.O.E. Property Services Agency on new build and refurbishment projects of substantial scale. He later moved to Birmingham City Council, working in several departments on the maintenance and refurbishment of a variety of property categories. He obtained Ordinary and Higher National Certificate in Building Construction and qualified in 1989 as a Chartered Building Surveyor. The years prior to the formulation of the Partnership were spent in retail organisations and private practice gaining a keen commercial approach to property.

Both partners are members of the Association for project Safety and Mr Bate is a Corporate Member of The Association of Building Engineers. The practise is also CHAS (Construction Health & Safety) registered in the fields of Design and CDM Coordination.

Both partners are founder members of the West Midlands Branch of The Pyramis & Thysbe Club, a national organisation set up for surveyors appointed in respect of The Party Wall etc. Act 1996.
